What is the better method and tool to use when grinding out an early 1200cc gearbox to be able to fit a 1600cc engine? Some old sites say to use the flywheel as the grinder, and most people use a dremel or drill but what attachment or bit is best to use as i don`t want to create any sparks? Alex

the gearbox is made of alloy which means you should not get sparks as the metal is soft. its best to slide the engine onto the gear box and turn it over by hand a good couple or three times, so the fly wheel marks the gearbox housing..i did mine with a lovely air grinder that is about 1.5times the size of a dremmell..with some grinding bits to fit off friendly mr snap on...did not take to long a couple of tries mounting engine to box and all done...wear a face dust mask..keep the engine well away from your grinding area and well covered up..you will be amazed where the swarf gets..plenty of carb/clutch cleaner to wash all down with afterwards..

the gearbox is a magnisum alloy and can and do catch fire just like the engine cases. your'll blood unlucky if it does catch fire though, have welded up cases befor ewith no probs so a bit of grinding shouldn't be a prob. have fun
