there are four! one of them is backward i think its the top right one it has the starter conected to it! you have to undo it from the starter side not the engine side mind you the top two are a pain to get to anyway

If its anything like mine then the two top bolts are in the engine bay and the pain in the arse one could be the one near the clutch operating lever, the one at the top of the starter motor has a "D" bolt and can be quite tricky to remove the nut on the other end if the "d" bolt spins around! Patience and you`ll get there Alex

If its a 1200cc engine, the bolt will be in the engine bay and if its a 1600cc it will be next to the clutch operating lever behind the firewall if that helps Alex

clutch cable starter motor 1__________2 | | | | | | 3 _________4
Number one is a bugger to see, jack up/ramps at rear passenger side. get under the vehicle just in front of your passenger rear wheel so you can see the clutch adjuster at the end of the cable then look towards the engine and slightly left (hard work on your back easier on a ramp) and you also have the heat exchanger to fight for space with....you should see the head of a 17 mm bolt..long exstension and hopefully its not to tight,,, Number 2 is from standing behind the vehicle looking at engine bay is to the right handside behind the tin ware reach round (is tight again for space on a beetle) personal experience if you got big arms as i, remove the engine lid.again 17mm..can be a major pain in the arse when refiiting as this is the one above your starter...3+4 both easily seen from underneath ..worth removing the rear tin ware (crank/fan belt pully end as gives you a small amount of much needed space....)
