who did your push rod tubes??did they know what they were doing??? have you got the sprung loaded after market ones or original style ones the push rod tubes themselves wont make the noise but if you have the original style ones fitted then the heads should have been taken off to replace them which is an engine out job and the top end should really have been stripped and rebuilt...as they would have to lap the heads in...

your mums friend is he a competent mechanic?? as looking at the push rod tubes you got the top end should have been taken apart and everything done to the book..as in the pistons would have to be removed as the barrells needed lapping in to the heads... the pistons have a arrow on them and should (without looking in the manual)be pointing towards the flywheel as this helps with correct ring wear and rotation all should be thoroughly cleaned and then cleaned again...i would have personally removed all the valves de coked and lapped them in to there seats to...clean out all the oil ways in the push rod tubes...check all the cylinder head studs as they do pull out of the casing with wear and tear and over tightening,,, would get your "mums mate" back to have a listen and if its top end then it could be down to incompetence...
