Trying to do some planning in advance for my rebuild and after ideas. I want to put J tubes on the engine to aid performance but realise this will be at the cost of heating. I've seen a few cars done the same but wondered what type of heating they had gone for (if any) I've looked at an eberspacher system but it's a bit costly so I want ask if there is anyone else who can come up with a cheaper or another way of keeping warm...

you can get propex heaters but they run off gas. they're better suited for campers really.
we've got j tubes on our van so mainly using the woolly hat and gloves method as suggested by sausage ;D

as im new to all this i dont really no much at the moment. the heating in my bug is near enough non existant. i hasve replaced a couple of the pipes i nthe engine that mike said needed replacing and it hasnt made a massive different. is this just the way bugs are?? and the windows always getting steamed up and condensationy is this also just a bug thing? ? i realise it wont be as bad in summer.

J tubes on my ghia too, only really used it in the summer, but will be taking it to dubfreeze. I was thinking about making up a 12v electric fan heater or something! Either that or wrap up warm lol.

before i replaced the engine in the bus the stock heating worked great, got very toasty on long runs. running j tubes and an eberspacher (when it works : now check all your pipes and that the exchangers are opening fully. otherwise hats, scarf, gloves etc. maplins do a nice 12v heated blanket ;D

Never had experience of Jtubes - did consider it for our bus at one point.... But I must say that the stock heating system in a Bug (when working) is probably as good as any other method out there - if not better! The heating in my old bug was permanently on (a bonus in Shetland!) and the whole car was fantastically heated in about 5mins. The heating in Boogie's bug is working perfectly too and takes 5-10mins to get up to the right heat. Do auxiluary heaters alter power performance at all? I think i read about someone have a slight loss in power after fitting a Propane Gas Heater. Hats, gloves, scarves etc. is the cheapest

Is there something you want to tell us? Seriously - bugs are notoriously bad at initial heating, like most replies have said, on a long run you'll be fine, but for a 5 min trip it's something you'll just have to get use to.
