my fuel gauge is reading that ive got just over half a tank of fuel, all the time. ive removed and checked out the float etc n all seems fine. when the float mechs were dis connected, the gauge was still reading just over half a tank. what would be causing this ? is the question i would like to ask you nice peoples could it be a faulty needle gubbins or either a faulty resonator fingy ? or sumfink else ? ive jus been down da scrappers and grabbed a whole complete speedo. its out of a later bug than mine. my speedo goes up to 90mph and this new one goes up to 100. say for instance, i put this complete 100mph verstion in my bug, would the speed reading still be correct ? if not, then i will see if the needle and resonator, will fit my 90mph one.

Sounds electrical to me dude.
Do you have a multimeter with a resistance check on it. If you do, then measure the resistance across the sender from a good ground, to the sender connection that goes to the gauge, this should vary from nearly 1 when the tank is empty, to very low resistance when the tank is full, if this is OK then the bugger is yer gauge or a bad ground at yr gauge or of course your voltage regulator has a bad connection to yer speedo.
I don't know if yer speedo will be accurate with the new one in, I thought the accuracy came from the wheels and the diameter of the tyres so if you havn'e changed this, then it should be fine.
Good luck.
If you havn't got a multimeter then see me at the Abbey in the morning !

yep sound like a earthing short somewhere mate of your fuel gauge. As too the speedo like Nige said this is set via ether the diff, or the gearbox depending on vehicle, so would be set to read accurately with all stock parts for that vehicle. Such as diff ratios, wheel rims and tires sizes, as a rule if your running on over size rims your speedo will over read. telling you you're going faster than you really are. ;D
